Join us at NSW’s oldest aquatic reserve to learn about fascinating migratory shorebirds summering in Sydney. We’ll explore the reserve in our small group looking for these special birds while learning to identify tricky shorebirds and spotting familiar favourites along the way. Part of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, migratory birds travel to Sydney from as far away as Alaska and Siberia to escape the Northern Hemisphere’s cold winter each year. Their journeys are among the most incredible stories in the natural world and we’ll share them all while investigating this site, rich with migratory species.

Location: Long Reef Aquatic Reserve (meet-up details given after booking)

Date: Saturday 1 Febuary
Walk details: We’ll begin with a short introduction to shorebirds before heading into the reserve in our small group. Please note this walk is not accessible as the path down to the reserve is a set of long steps.

Some of the exciting birds we mighhhttt see along the way: Golden Plover, Ruddy Turnstone, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel and so much more :)

What you’ll get: A two-hour birdwatching walk with guides Stephanie and Kelly including an introduction to shorebirds and how to identify them. You’ll also receive an educational checklist for the reserve to use on the day with resources on shorebirds included that can be reused. Plus, you’ll get a cute little Sydney Bird Club pin :)

This walk is recommended for beginners or anyone who wants to have fun! Sydney Bird Club was founded by a couple of fun-loving artists (Stephanie and Amy from Outer Island). Our walks are a way for us to share our love for birds and the beautiful city we live in. Good vibes only!

Please note the rain date for this walk is Saturday 8 February, 10AM-12PM (a different time). Spots are limited for this small group walk. There are no refunds if you or your guests are unable to attend either the original walk or rain date. The walk will proceed in light rain, however in the case heavy rain on both dates, the event will be cancelled and your ticket will be fully refunded.
